With the newly decentralised Irish Aid being located in Limerick, it seems apt that the Minister of State with responsibility for overseas development should be a Limerick TD.

Today, Brian Cowan, our new overlord, announced a whole host of Ministers of State, including a promotion for Peter Power of Limerick East.

“Every politician wants to serve their local community and their constituency in the Dail and to be invited by the Taoiseach to be a member of Government is a huge personal honour and I am absolutely thrilled,” Minister Power told the Limerick Leader in an interview this evening.

“I am humbled to have been asked to be a member of Government to represent the people of Limerick in Government,” he said.

Congratulations even came from the opposite side of the Dail floor following the announcement, with Labour’s health spokesperson, Jan O’Sullivan, also a Limerick East TD, extending congratulations to Minister Power.

In a statement following the announcement, she said “With a Senior and Junior Minister, Limerick has two advocates in Government and that is welcome.”

A woman from Ballysimon has been given two weeks to prove that money seized from her home last week is hers and not her husband’s.

Almost €11,800 was seized from her home by the Criminal Assets Bureau as part of Operation Platinum last Thursday and Friday.

Applying for the money to be returned to his client, solicitor Ted McCarthy told Limerick District Court that the seized money was from the woman’s legitimate business, and without it, said business would fold. He told the court that she was presented with a receipt for the money when it was seized.

He also told the court that he would need two weeks to get the necessary documentation ready to prove that the money was hers.

Roxboro Gardai were hoping to hold on to the money for a longer period of time, but judge Aeunus McCarthy ordered that the money could only be held until May 27th.

In all, twelve court orders were applied for in relation to Operation Platinum.

The home form may have gone south in recent times with a 3-0 hammering from Bohemians and a 2-2 draw with Monaghan last week but with new Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trappatoni making the draw, Limerick 37 have been handed a plum home tie with FAI Ford cup holders Cork City in the third round. The game will be played over the June bank holiday weekend, probably on Friday the 6th of June at Jackman Park. Hopefully a big crowd will turn up to support the super blues. Limerick have played Cork already in the league cup this season at Turners cross a few weeks ago and were on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat in front of a not so huge crowd of 272 people! Hopefully the Limerick contingent will turn out to see the cup tie in larger numbers!!

IN rugby news, Anthony Foley lead the Munster team out against Glasgow Warriors in their last competitive game of the season in the Magners league last weekend and despite scoring a try himself, Axel and the red army went down on a scoreline of 18-21.

In other Munster related news, Welshman Nigel Owens will referee the Heineken cup final which will also be coach Declan Kidneys swansong as Munster boss as he has accepted another Job which entails being in charge of a team that wear green shirts. No replacement coach for Munster has been announced but there is speculation that Connaught boss Michael Bradley and indeed Mick Galway may have some involvement. No announcements are expected for at least a few weeks.

Cork Con won the AIB all Ireland League title at the weekend when they defeated Garryowen on an 18-8 scoreline.

A Virgin flight had to make an unscheduled landing at Shannon after a flight attendant became ill.

The flight from Boston to London Heathrow touched down at 0630 hrs this morning after the attendant complained of feeling unwell.

She was taken to the midwestern regional hospital in Dooradoyle with suspected appendicitis
