Truce will not deter Gardai from their work
You would swear it was VE Day the way Barry Duggan presents it in the Independent this morning. Aparantly the McCarthy Dundon gang and the Keane Collopy gang have agreed to not kill each other. There was no mention of whether or not they would stop killing ordinary members of the public with their drugs though.
I suppose two murders in the space of a week was bringing undue attention onto them and the presence of the Emergency Response Unit was making business more difficult.
The independent reported also that after the “truce” was reached over the weekend, members of the McCarthy-Dundon faction criminal fraternaty flew out from Shannon to Spain on Saturday morning. One has to ask why the Gardai didn’t stop them and check if any of them were wanted for anything before letting them go.
The gangs did not talk directly to each other, but the truce was negotiated through shuttle deplomacy involving two un-named go-betweens.
The last time there was a “truce” a number of cases collapsed when victims of feud related violence decided to drop any charges against members of opposing sides.
Anyway, the story is here if you care to read it. What these do-gooder go betweens don’t seem to realise is that it while an end to the feud is desirable, it must involve an end of the gangs too.

They have agreed not to kill each other.
The same agreement took place between Republicans and Loyalist years ago when top brass agreed not to kill each other.
Unfortunately no regard was ever given to the killing of foot soldiers.
Is this truce going to be the same??
Dont kill top brass, but innocent’ish foot soldiers are o.k as cannon fodder!!!

I see. Stop fighting and get back to running your organised crime business instead.
Nice.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
If there was ever a reason to keep the pressure up
May 19th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
The mafia men of Honour. What a load of bull.
May 19th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Ross Kemp must have had a word *cough* :)
May 19th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
The two “go-betweens” wouldn’t happen to be the same pair of daws who made a show of themselves on Joe Duffy’s Radio show recently by any chance? One a “man of the cloth” and the other no stranger to goings-on of the McC/D gang.
Anyway. To hell with their “truce”. Obviously the pressure’s on from the ERU, CAB and Garda - they’re feeling the pinch at last. I note there’s no mention of them giving up the drug dealing operations. Do they expect that once the guns stay quiet they can continue killing people with their merchandise unhindered?
Too much “Sopranos”, they’re starting to believe they’re in it now.
May 19th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
it just goes to show if we had a constant clamp down on these scum they could be put out of business, let’s hope the gardai keep up the good work and the judges support them.
May 19th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
@ Hoof
I don’t think these guys believe they are under pressure from the Gardai or CAB. That could take years! Years as in years for CAB or the Gardai to progress with recent raids, seizures etc.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:24 pm
Who the f*** do they think they are with their talk of a truce. By all means cease criminality immediately but calling it a “truce” shows delusions of grandure.
I wonder if those two ejits from the Joe Duffy were involved in getting these scumbag criminals to stop killing each other? They only way they could have made any agreement is if they made an agreement as to how to split up the Limerick drug trade.
Certain politicians in Limerick have been feeding this delusion of grandure by telling relatives of jailed scumbags that they would be released as soon as the “feuding” ended.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
I don’t believe Devane had anything to do with this “truce” at least I didn’t get that impression from his comments in the leader online anyway.
May 19th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Truce my arse. Let the authorities do their job and put these criminals out of business.
May 19th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Quote from the Limerick Leader. Its not just the criminal scumbags who have delusions of grandeur!
“Solicitor John Devane said his recent suggestion on national radio that the gangs should sit down and talk was the “catalyst that led to these peace talks”.
There you have it, Devane’s the man!
He does however graciously concede that 300+ Gardai had a small part to play
“He added, however, that Operation Platinum “had a knock-on effect”.
They don’t want CAB coming to Limerick every other week, taking their property from them,” he said. “I think they felt if ‘we keep shooting each other, we’ll get more media attention and garda attention and we are going to suffer financially’.”
May 19th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
Any point I had to make has already been made by previous posters. I would not like to see any let up from the Gardai or CAB. They’re feeling the heat. Keep it up.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
“There was no mention of whether or not they would stop killing ordinary members of the public with their drugs though.”
Thats definitely OTT. That line would fit nicely in most tabloids.
Exactly how many people have died directly from drug use in Limerick this year. It is also their choice to take drugs..the drug dealers are not killing anyone with their drugs..your anti gangs tone is all well and good but don’t get stupidly carried away..be realistic at least.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
this is all about the five men doing life for the kieran keane murder, the judge at their trial said that as long as the feud continues, theres no hopethat these men will be released. of course its also connected to the recent pressure from cab and cops. but i can understand the cops welcoming a truce because lets face it its the cops who have to investigate these feuds and they are very complex and difficult investigations, we can sit at home critiscisingthe law but i sure wouldnt like to have to be trying to take these guys down, i think the cops are doing very well indeed. and remember a lot ofpeople have been murdered in this feud who were not directly involved.
May 19th, 2008 at 5:43 pm
I honestly believe that these feuding gangs think by admitting to a truce they have saved themselves from CAB. They do not know what their up against. CAB have taken down bigger and scarier scumbags than these and some of these even wore suits and carried briefcase’s. Lock them up and throw away the key.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
@Trinity
There’s no point CAB/ERU or the Gardai in sitting on their arse either and letting these pricks build up cash/property rich empires. If it takes a few years to finally rid us of this cancer, then attack it now and continue to attack it in every possible manner. At least a start has been made in cracking down and putting them out of business.
The thugs must be concerned that the glorified attention they’ve sought by engaging in this notorious drug turf war/feud has (at last) brought the State to use strong arm tactics. They must be hurting if the profits of their labours are taken from them, and continues to be seized.
Why else would they crave sensationalist media coverage such as that readily provided by the “Independent” to highlight this so-called truce in a manner more reminiscent of a breakthrough in the Middle East.
Ms. Keane and Dundon “negotiating” from their comfortable cells. Really!!, quite the little diplomatic corps we’re locking up these days. [Mod Edit ... Removed portion] now that a carve-up of drug dealing territory has been “negotiated” and the sacred word of honour of one scumbag to another has been given not to fire the next shot.
For their next trick I suppose Major John deChastelain can be persuaded to supervise the destruction of weapons at Castle Dundon.
May 19th, 2008 at 6:35 pm
if the law wont sort out these sick people who sell death and misery to our proud nation, than they will face another higher power ,oh my god lads is this what we voted in to goverment, sell your drugs as long as ye keep it out of the media.VOTE SEIN FEIN
May 19th, 2008 at 6:38 pm
you all make good points. big woop a truce, drugs will still be sold- because there is a demand for them. seriousness aside, i kind of like that Limerick (ciy) has an edgey rep. (fanned by the media), we’re never dull!
nowhere in this mess is there a female presence: long time before this gets sorted!
May 19th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
The guards have them on the run.Cab will destroy them.
May 19th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Nonsence, you were doing fine there until the end. You want us to jump from the frying pan into the fire?
May 19th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
the likes of kate french and her frinds keeps this people in buisnessn rip
May 19th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Vote Sein Fein?
Are you sure Sinn Féin won’t mind?
May 19th, 2008 at 10:44 pm
“a provisional truce”
Duggan you are a total idiot after that, you’d swear it was the IRA v Britain for christ sake.
We all know the individuals involved in “brokering” the “truce” they are self serving dicks of the higest order, they think they will save us from these scumbags.
Make no mistake, the Mc Dundon’s only agreed as they are all shitting themselves as they have the Island crowd, the CAB and another hornets nest all after them, and what they have outside jail are only women, wait till the likes of Keans & Wayne/John Dundon are back on the streets, they are all dead, or will do their worst to kill the other side, these people are animals, keep up the pressure and lock them up, no actually on second thoughts let them kill each other, on less piece of filth on the streets.
Think about it for just one minute, do you think you can reason with the likes of the above and another “general” that scumbag that was involved in a murder case where people conveniently forgot witnessing a murder, these people thrive on being known as scumbags, how can these bastards be expected to hold a gentlemans agreement for gods sake?
May 20th, 2008 at 7:22 am
raggedtrousers Says:
“nowhere in this mess is there a female presence: long time before this gets sorted!”
You must be joking.
Have you seen their wifes & girlfriends. They are every bit as bad fpr winding it up and intimidating their neighbours.
May 20th, 2008 at 8:20 am
Devane landed himself in the mire last night on “the last word” by telling the whole world that he was approached by the local mobsters to launder money for them. About 4 million he said. I could hear John Gilligan swallow very heavy in the back ground as Devane let go on what happened. Now that the CAB have got them on the run, they are like a cornered wounded dogs and you know what a cornered wounded dog will do, bite back. You could see a lot of people with information disappear. Even Devane.
May 20th, 2008 at 10:53 am
Correct me if I’m wrong but organising the type of raids that Platinum saw would take months of planning and organisation. This would rule out the possibility that this was a knee jerk reaction to the recent murders. Therefore this “truce” will have zero impact on the operations of the authorities right?
May 20th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Being asked to commit a crime is not covered by Solicitor Client confidentiality.
Looks like the Gardai are entitled to some answers from Mr Devane.
May 20th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Devane is a publicity seeking nut who would not see the danger even if he was trying to speak with his foot lodged deeply in his mouth………
soundbites may bite back, sound !!!!
May 20th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
truce my arse!!! does anyone remember that their was a story about 2gangs in limerick called a truce going back about 2 or 3 years ago. the papers will print anything to sell them!
May 20th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
bock the robber ,what do you mean by that statement, can you say a little more, like wont mind what??? and mushy its not about how well we word things, its about standing up to these sick people ,who by the way, want your children as young as possible hooked on drugs selling their boddies to keep there habbit going,at the youngest age possible. We have a new war on our hands and its not the brits this time, its the sick twisted lost souls who will go to any lenghts to make money,Yes the law are doing the best they can,but they need more information, and there is good people like ourselfs who could know something and all it takes is a little phone call, its not just up to the law,we as a nation need to make a stand, simple as that ,no buts,
May 21st, 2008 at 9:55 am
I agree with everything you say,Nonsence, but vote Sinn Fein. You’re having a laugh.
May 21st, 2008 at 6:32 pm
ok mushy maybe you have a point but i cant discuss politics with internet i retract that statement
May 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
“the law are doing the best they can,but they need more information”
Would you trust the law to keep you family safe after giving names in court and after the court lets the scumbags see you there? Cop on man.
May 21st, 2008 at 11:00 pm
no i wouldnt,
i know a woman who went witness in a case and the accused people gave her hell, the cops never helped her in any way, they dont careonce they get a conviction.
May 22nd, 2008 at 11:23 am
what is sinn fein going to do??
total and utter NONSENCE
sure aren’t they up to their eyes administering british rule in part of our country
i find “vote sinn fein”very amusing ha ha
May 22nd, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Kevin from curnane very easy to amuse you isnt it,keep it real fool,
May 24th, 2008 at 12:27 am
Ask the family of that young Quinn lad up the North what Sinn Fein can do for you
June 4th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
The solution to this problem is alot easier than people think. Just let the Emergency Response Unit in as a joint effort against the dundons, let the ERU constantly harass them make there life a misery, to hell with scum like the dundons and there rights, just let the ERU and give them the right to show the scum whose boss.
July 4th, 2008 at 9:26 am
Ok, I think the only solution here to start with re open Spike Island, anyone found guilty of being involved in the feud, be it Limerick, Dublin, Cork etc should be thrown in there. Prison officers to guard the outside.Drop food in every week!!! And let them sort things out amongst themselves, then noone gets hour. Each prisoner’s allowed 1 visit a week, screened!!
There problem sorted. Won’t be long til all this crap is finished!!
