Operation Platinum: Two weeks to prove money is legitimate

A woman from Ballysimon has been given two weeks to prove that money seized from her home last week is hers and not her husband’s.

Almost €11,800 was seized from her home by the Criminal Assets Bureau as part of Operation Platinum last Thursday and Friday.

Applying for the money to be returned to his client, solicitor Ted McCarthy told Limerick District Court that the seized money was from the woman’s legitimate business, and without it, said business would fold. He told the court that she was presented with a receipt for the money when it was seized.

He also told the court that he would need two weeks to get the necessary documentation ready to prove that the money was hers.

Roxboro Gardai were hoping to hold on to the money for a longer period of time, but judge Aeunus McCarthy ordered that the money could only be held until May 27th.

Live 95FM has more.

In all, twelve court orders were applied for in relation to Operation Platinum.

How many legitimate business people hold on to that amount of cash in their homes at any given time?…..I mean, what with there being so many criminals about and all that.

  2. Squid Says:

you would be surprised, there have been bigger amounts than that stolen from businesspeople from their homes.

  3. Hoof Says:

Probably Squid. I’d question the wisdom of doing so as it’s not a good idea one way or the other to have so much loot in the house…..not, I hasten to add, that I have that problem as the stuff leaks through my fingers.

  4. Dell Boy Says:

Holding on the money in your house is not the problem or the question being asked here. its where it came from in the first place is CAB’s question.
If i may pose one stupid question please Squid.
If CAB are now on the money trail for criminals, if your own gang members can turn on you and either kill you or turn you into the cops. If rival gangs can target your house/ your family and friends and kill in cold blood then why would any teenager with half a brain choose this as a lifestyle. I struggle to see the attraction of being dead or in prision before the age of 25. Anybody out there with an explanation?

  5. THUG Says:

tats the life we chose dell boy if you dont like it then go somewhere else

  6. Anonymous1 Says:

Basically it makes the 17 year old scivvy feel like the hardest guy in Limerick if he is “in” with whoever is the current bigwig of whichever gang he is in.

Nothing like being able to say you are going for a pint with one of the [ insert relevant scumbag name here] and everyone thinking you are playing with the big boys.
    Basically they are just losers.

  7. Squid Says:

    @THUG

You didn’t answer his question though, why do you chose that life?

  8. Bock the Robber Says:

Dell Boy: I think you explained it in your comment. Half a brain is the answer.

  9. Funkyz-Do Says:

    @ THUG

Why don’t you go somewhere else ?

    @ Anonymous1

You hit the nail on the head there.

  10. weston mafia Says:

he did answer the question squid,he said because you have 17 year old losers wanting to get in with the big wigs,is that not the answer as to why morons want to hook up with a so called crew and risk death or life in prison

  11. Shannaboley Says:

A lack of education, parenting, and very low self esteem.

  12. ann Says:

Really its because they have no brains…. between lack of education and the purification of the cells from drugs they think this is life. Neanderthal behavior.

  13. concerned parent Says:

i see from your comment above” THUG ” you have probably left school before your time, and from your comment cannot spell, and there is a strong probability you will need help to read this comment. So i hope dis wil help u. u nd ur kind r muppets.

  14. wally Says:

its a combination of many things.
easy money, excitement.low self esteem, i dont think too many of them realise what they are actually getting into, i and when they are involved its very hard to get away from the gang. i know one guy who had to go to live in another country to break the cycle he is away now over a year , working going straight and got married he had had enough and is full of remorse and shame because of the past. so its not easy, a lot of these guys are young and are impressionable, they are not all scum or evil, being a criminal is not a good life, paul williams glamourises it but i can tell you its a very unfulfilling empty life.

  15. emmett Says:

Don’t you guys get it? Is not that they actually choose this lifestyle, it is what they expect. Dead or jail by 25 is a “normal ” lifestyle expectancy.

  16. Anonymous1 Says:

Oh come on ….. “low self esteem” “they don’t realise what they are getting into” what a load of horse shit.
Some people are just born into this life, I understand that, but some people just choose to integrate themselves with these criminals. It ups their scumbag rating massively and makes them feel hard.
Everyone in this country is aware of what is going on in Limerick and what these rival families are doing to each other so please don’t be as naive as to suggest that these 17 year old muppets aren’t aware of what they are getting into.
They read the papers, they listen to the radio just like everyone else and I guarantee you there is an awful lot more going on that never makes it to the media but is common knowledge throughout Southill Moyross ect….. So they know exactly what happens to people who get themselves involved in this big mess.
I think the bottom line is they get themselves involved cause it makes them feel hard.

  17. Angry Man Says:

    HUG A THUG!!

They are young and niave and very impressionable. They do know whats going on but want to look hard at that age and think they have something to prove so they will hang out with them. Agredd though they are complete and utter morons. they are the ones carrying the guns and drugs while the kingpins never get touched… except for Mr Keane who was caught with a sackful of drugs walking across wasteland.. sorry but I think thats still priceless!! And then he tried to say that he was carrying it for some 17 year old.. ha ha..one one of Limericks hardest criminals carrying a sack of drugs for a youth.. you couldnt make it up seriously!!

  18. biggie Says:

if one of your sons ended up in court , you would be defending him to the bitter end. lets have a bit more talk about the real criminals out their the ones who could solve the drugs problem overnight, thats the people who are buying the drugs, and then saying oh isnt limerick gone to the dogs with vioence.

  19. Jenkins Says:

Money, drugs, social deprivation and family all play a part but if you have ever spoken with these young scumbags you would realise that they all suffer from the same delusion; “that they are smarter than anyone else , that they will never get caught and if by some amazing lack of luck they do they will be looked after in prison or St. Pats which they have been told is like a summer camp.”
By the time they get around to realising they were wrong they do not know any other way of living.

  20. Pat Johnston Says:

    biggie Says:
……… “lets have a bit more talk about the real criminals out their the ones who could solve the drugs problem overnight, thats the people who are buying the drugs

Sure the users are part of the problem BUT when is the last time you saw the users kill somebody?”

Are you suggesting then that the drug gangs are somehow not “real criminals”?

  21. biggie Says:

they are feeding into this problem in a big way if they stopped buying drugs the drug barons would not be their so they would not be killing each other over patches, the users are scum total scum. we dont have to say anymore about the barons we all know they are scum, but they are not going to stop selling, its in the power of the users to stop this cancer.the drug dealers are not going to the users either its the buyers who are going to them i see it every day. scum

  22. John Smith Says:
