Gardai secure orders to hold on to Operation Platinum cash

Gardai have been granted orders by the District Court to retain cash recovered during yesterday’s Operation Platinum, set up to target organised crime in the city. The operation involved months of investigation culminating in the massive Garda raids on 150 properties yesterday.

Of the 12 orders applied for at the court, the Gardai were given the right to hold on to cash for three months for ten of the orders. A six week period was granted for one order and another will be reviewed on Monday.

In total €250,000 in Euro, Sterling and US dollars were seized yesterday. The initial amount was thought to be €100,000.

The work of the CAB goes on, and we could be seeing as many as 12 houses being seized in the not too distant future.

€250,000 cash, €200,000 drugs, 12 x houses @ approx €200,000 = €2.4 mill = in total €2.85 mill ha someone is outta pocket at last. Plus the houses that the computers and paper trail turns up never mind the loss of rent from all these houses. I’d say they wished they all fecked off to Spain a long time ago.

they will seize nothing and give the money back in my opinion

  3. Hoof Says:

Disagree, Sad. - They’ll give it back only if it can be proven to have been earned legally and tax paid, etc.. Remeber CAB also operates as an arm of Revenue, so like any tax issue, it’s up to the person who has the cash to prove its legitimacy. Smart accountants might try to retrieve some of it, but a lot of these people still claim unemployment and other benefits from the State. A habit that may yet come back to bite them in the arse.

Kind of hard to explain the houses, cars, foreign properties, computers and thousands in banknotes in various currencies lying about the home when you’re on the dole I’d imagine.

CAB are involved this is about a paper trail to see where the laundered money is. Seizures are inevitable. This is how to hurt them to force their hand and make them feck off out of this country. Plus the regeneration thing needs to know who owns what houses.

This type of money is small change to the big guys. Its the equivalent to our loose change jars where we keep our 1c coins.
The Gardai once more have launched a spectacular show of strength, coincidentally at the same time as we get a new taoiseach . John Gilligan is in prison , but i cant think of too many high profile drug barons that are in prison.

The gardai can catch the users who sell to fund their habit , but i could nearly do that myself. Gardai intelligence is an oxymoron
Hope they empty our prisons of the people who put up TV aerials on their houses without planning permission , and get some real criminals behind bars.

Maybe the government should spend less on gardai and try setting up some real treatment centres and effective education systems for the young and disillusioned

  7. pat johnston Says:

I agree with Pitchcap, BUT a major law & order clampdown is also part of the solution. We need both a social inclusion and law & order response.

The Gardai have made a good start now we need to keep pressure on our politicians to make sure this continues.

  8. Rhebogue Ranter Says:
