The Orangemen are coming.

Tourists will soon be able to follow the route of King Billy through Limerick thanks to a new initiative being created.

Limerick is to be part of a new initiative between both tourist organisations in Northern Ireland and the Republic.

The Orange Trail will start in Derry City, head over to the site of the Battle of the Boyne, down to Limerick where the Williamites renaged on the treaty, and off to Kinsale where after a 13 day siege, they took Charles fort, bringing an end to the Jacobite-Williamite war.

The reaction to this one is going to be … interesting.

Wonder how they’ll handle the delicate subject of the breaking of the Treaty? Seeing as the Orangistas are so soft and cuddly these days lets hope they don’t take note of theirt ancestors behaviour and tear up the GFA. Poor ould Berties legacy would be gone. !o!

If only Sarsfield hadn’t been so honourable and taken up the offer from the French forces who had arrived just days after the siege to resume the fight. We’d be fluent in a few languages, have vines growing in the Vale d’Or, better cheese, have no problem kicking the government du’jour in the derriere and cheaper French Markets at Riverfest - and year round, non.

  2. goo Says:

let me see if ive got this correct, in face of public outrage Bertie and co. gave the go ahead to smash and destroy Irelands ancient and most historical site, Tara Valley (of which the Hill is only part btw) while at the same time bending over backwards to accomodate hardline unionists in preserving the massive Battle of the Boyne site.

Now the cap tipping councilers are inviting the Orangies right down into the heart of Limerick to rub our noses in it altogether?! No doubt the Love Ulster parade will soon follow. Shur while we’re at it why not re-instate the Queen as head of the Irish state, re-join the commonwealth and contest the british elections.

Ok, in keeping with events I nominate former UDA drug-lord ‘mad-dog’ Johhny Adair for LordMayor of Limerick. Who say aye?

  3. bumbaclot Says:

I also want a giant statue of the lovely Mr “Ulster SAYS NO” Paisley plonked just outside Brown Thomas..

  4. Hoof Says:

@Goo. Yep, the fact that they spent a fortune buying up and preserving the Boyne Valley while ripping up the Tara one does speak volumes for the ben-dover attitude of the Dublin regime towards the oráistes.

Coupled with the Shannon Slots sellout and Dermot Ahern telling his own Louth constituents that “not a red cent” would be made available for local hospitals while announcing the following day a multi-million euro (Irish taxpayer funded) motorway IN the North should make us ponder just how much of this so-called All-Ireland Economy that FF spout so much guff about benefits the taxpaying part of this island.

Give it another five years and we’ll have the Twalfth declared a holiday down here, that droning caterwaul “Irelands Call” replacing our anthem, a new flag reflecting our transition from a State to an Economy and Biffo going to the All-Ireland final between Offaly and Linfield attired in a tinfoil sash and bowler.

  5. Brian Says:

Any date on when this will happen, and will the ‘orange men’ in fact march on Limerick. No way they’l be sent packing like in dublin, already organisng protests, thats what ive heard

and like all true republicans ill be in front line.

  6. anon Says:

Are parades going to ensue?…An annual march down Clancy’s Strand for instance. This is top class sell out stuff ffs!!

  7. kevin from curnane Says:

you’ll probably see provisional sinn fein leading it.
    i can see it now.
    hundereds of orange men.
past clancy strand and up to the republican plot in st laurences graveyard.
martin maguinnes and ian paisley with their sashes on, hand in hand laying a wreath of poppys stained red with the blood of irish freedom fighters.
and for a grand finalee the playing of the sash my father wore
cant wait to see that one

  8. mushy Says:

A lot of the previous posts are in the language of the extremist the very people they’re so dead against. Lighten up people,no one is getting killed anymore. Other countries are able to accomodate differing cultures. We should grow up and do the same.

  9. Dellboy Says:

Some prefer to live in the past. 800 years of British rule, yadda yadda yadda…….oh! must tune into the premiership this w/end to see how my favourite team get on. Grow up and move along. Theres enough of crap going on in the world.

  10. King John Says:

It is good to see people get riled on other subjects other than crime gangs and dodgy Politicos. And sur isn’t it all over now. Will we get Lizzy or Big Ears to lead to march for a change?

  11. MARY Says:

WHAT! THERE WILL BE TROUBLE IF THEY COME TO LIMERICK.

  12. jombob Says:

laguage of extremist my..exremities, have u ever been to and orange parade or even to northern ireland itself? Go up and have a sniff around and then come back preaching about ‘growing up’ and accomodating other ‘cultures’.
Orangism as a ‘culture’ is, and always was, about asserting dominance, triumphalism and subjugation over irish caholics/nationalists in the north. Thats what the parades are about, thats what the songs are about and thats what the ‘culture’ is about. Anyother interpretaion would be either propagandic or plain nieavity.
Now they want to invite the down for a coat trail in limerick? No good will come of it thats for sure.

  13. Organonor Says:

What a glorious day for Ireland the “Love Ulster Parade” was a load of pissed up scumbags fleecing shops and smashing their windows, beating up journalists etc..
What made me chuckle was that a hefty amount of them were wearing Celtic Fc Jerseys…twats..
If they come down here it will a repeat of that..scobe heaven..

  14. ann Says:

So is that the only issue you would have with this ?

  15. dell worker Says:

organ donor, it ws far more glorious than you realize because the ‘pissed up scumbags’ in dublin ran the pissed up scumbags of loyalist terrorism off the streets of our capital and rightly so.

dellboy, who’s living in the past and who’s living ina fantasy land? because last i checked the ‘troubles’ are far from over, tho they have entered a more peaceful phase where the british/loyalist forces have agreed to stop murdering catholics and their leaders in exchange for ira disbandment, and some kind of political fudge come peace process.

Just because someone has a sudden brainwave doesnt mean its always a good idea. We can all allow ourselves to get carried away in the euphoria of Utopian ideas but its much more prudent be keep at least one eye one reality at the same time.

Let me ask all you ‘living in the past’ acusers a question, when did you last see a st. patricks day parade in northern ireland? Or indeed hear ANY plans or suggestion of one uttered from the lips of unionists? hmmm..?

now look me in the eyes and tell me its time for an orange march in limerick.

  16. Mickey's mickey Says:

    Dell worker

Personally the last St Patricks Day Parade I saw in the North of Ireland was in Belfast 2003. Now that is not saying there wasnt one this year (there was) but I didnt see it because I marched in the one in London.

I don’t think we should get too worked up about the Orange Order coming to Limerick. For the most part they are just conservative old men and not too dissimilar to the Free Masons who have a lodge across from King Johns Castle.

Have you heard of the Ancient Order of Hiberniansor the knights of St Columbans? or even the Rotary or Lions Clubs. All pretty similiar organisations. Fraternities of people for networking to keep the status quo ie that these people keep their positions in society.

Let them come to Limerick and then see who greets them. There are many people loyal to the status quo.

  17. dellworker Says:

my point was that st pats day parades are very marginalised and theres is no ‘national’ or state celebration, rather just local catholic areas, holding their own calebrations, when in recent years nationalists congregated in the center of belfast to celebrate the day it was seen by top unionist almost as an act of war. There was alot of seething and unabashed anger and the b-specials were clawing their way out of graves and retirment homes and the ruc trigger fingers twitching like seldom before.

Not that im making a comparison between a st pats day parade and an Orange one. Perhaps next time youll pay more attention to the people taking part in the orange parades, it might help you to loose the rose tinted blindfold you wear. You’ll notice hardnd loyalist gangs, sectarian marching bands and drunken violent yobos screaming hate filled obsenities at the catholic residents who are forced to endure there parades past their doorsteps.

  18. ann Says:

Are you really on this planet Mickey’s mickey …I find what you have to say is just trying to provoke a reactionary position from commenters. Your comment is by far the most ridiculous I’ve seen in some time.
The Orange Order in your blinkered view is basically a grown up version of say the Boy Scouts for example. Have you had a mental health review recently or are you far too busy being ‘loyal to the status quo’.
They have no blood on their hands there just ‘fraternities of people for networking’ ie planning ways to kill and mutilate Catholics for centuries.
So you must be in awe of the ‘free masons’ especially the guys across from King Johns Castle. They still haven’t heard of equality in this day and age….NO WOMEN ALLOWED!!!
I’m quite bored with your illusions of grandeur yesterday ‘Jesus’ ffs would you ever build a bridge and get over yourself .

  19. ann Says:

In fact Mickey’s Mikey scroll back for a few stories and see just how much of a hypocritite you are, the proof is there .
May 6th your debate with ‘Dan Sullivan’ and how much you defended Bobby Sands. Today low and behold you do a flip and are in the highest praise for the Orange Order.
Now can anyone please tell me how you can justifibly stauncly defend two complete opposites and not be a ‘Walter Mitty’ type character as I have heard 1 commentor equate you to.
You spout the biggest pile of crap ever. Jump into the shower there and get rid of the smell of bullshit cause it’s starting to become a problem!

  20. dellworker Says:

[mod edit] ok lads and lassies, less of the personal attacks.

  21. Mickey's mickey Says:

    dellworker

Its funny how many people turn to personal insults when I disseminate their arguments. Your statement was wrong and misleading.

Your point is hate filled but I don’t blame you for having this view because our history has been bloody. Nevertheless I feel your argument is worth analysing.

Yes there is many on the Loyalist/Unionist side that hate
Catholics / Republicans / Nationalists and resent the St Patricks Day Parade. The “hardnd loyalist gangs, sectarian marching bands and drunken violent yobos” etc are not the Orange Order and I doubt if they will be the type of people that come to Limerick. Before you lose your rag here I know there is a lot of this element within the Orange Marches and I in no way condone them but for the main part the OO are old men.

I do not carry anger for the OO out of choice and not out of ignorance of events in the North. I am committed to a Socialist Republic not a country of devoid of diversity.

    Ann

You are investing way too much time in responding to my comments. You would be better served reading my comments first. No of the points you make reflect anything I have said here. Funnily enough the commenter who referred to me as Walter Mitty had the same problem. You should look up what the term Walter Mitty actually means before you use it.

  22. Fintan Stack Says:

    Walter Mitty

An ordinary, ineffectual individual who portrays himself as somebody he is not. A delusional person.

You are incredibly boring so I am going to leave it at that.

  23. Mickey'smickey Says:

Fintan/Anon/ann or who or whatever name you pick next.

You have been following me around like a bad smell for a few weeks now. You dont argue against me or add any new information to any post. You are a troll.

Walter Mitty is a term for a fantasist - someone who makes claims to live a life they dont but hey if you want to beleive your own propaganda just keep saying it. Of course it will come true!

Is this all you have to offer? Banal insults - Get real!

  24. Anonymoose Says:

    @Mickey’s mickey,
I think you probably meant Decimate because disseminate means something else entirely.
