Galvone to close as customers flock to “Ma’s”
It is claimed that many of the regulars of the Galvone Arms Pub in Southill have moved their custom to the unlicensed premises being operated by the Kelly brothers, Francis and Anthony.
Now the owners of the Galvone are selling up, and the Regeneration Agency (southside) are in negotiations to buy the place with a view to redeveloping the area.
According to the Examiner, the Regeneration Agency will hold onto the liquor licence in the hope that a public house might fit in to the newly developed area at the entrance of what is now O’Malley Park.
Meanwhile the Shebeen, known as Ma Kelly’s has survived four separate Garda raids, and now Roxboro Gardai are hoping to go the legal route. Limerick City Council are also exploring the possibility of going after the Kellys using planning legislation. The shed in the back garden of the Kelly family home is not zoned for recreation use, but for storage.
May 8th, 2008 at 8:46 am
It’s zoned residential
May 8th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Could a belly full of porter not be considered storage?
May 8th, 2008 at 11:27 am
With the taxes the Goverment are putting on drink served in licenced premises, and the introduction of the smoking ban, its surely no suprise that these ‘Shibeens’ are popping up all over the country. In my opinion, it amounts to no more than a few people meeting up in the same house everynight having a few cans and smokin a few fags????
May 8th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Doesn’t matter its not a pub. If this is true they are driving out tax payers and employers and robbing from society. It is us who make up the shortfall in our taxes. Can you imagine a health and safety officer trying to get in there?
May 8th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
nothing illegal in what theyre doing, just took an iniaitative fair play to them
May 8th, 2008 at 12:21 pm
Does the beginning of the last paragraph imply that the Roxboro Gardai have been going the ILLEGAL route up to now!!!!!
May 8th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
I think you know exactly what it means, and you are being a dick.
It means that it is possibly going to go through the courts.
But then you knew that already.
May 8th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
if they are charging money for the drink then its illegal as you have to have a licence to sell alcohol.
If they are giving the Drink way then theres nothing illegal as lots of people have bars in their house..
Anyone for a (free) pint after work?
May 8th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Squid
Your response to Mushy was over the top and you should apologise for calling him/her a “dick”. Mushy’s reference to “Gardai are hoping to go the legal route” was both fair comment and tongue in cheek. You seem to take yourself so seriously now that you will not tolerate any critique.
As far as I know it has not been by law decided if the Gardai have acted legally in confiscating the alcohol at this shebeen. I understand a Limerick lawyer of great standing (joke) is taking a case on behalf of the Kellys.
May 8th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
If you read the article in the Irish Times about this Shibeen, the proprietors claim they are being given money by people to buy drink on their behalf, and they call around later to drink it. ‘Sounds like a lads evening in’ to me. Am I to be subjected to Garda harrassment the next time the lads call around for a game of cards?
May 8th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Support them

Good point John Smith . What people do in the privacy of their own homes is their own business .
May 8th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
I’d go there myself for a drink and a boop around the kitchen if they don’t mind a few gays !
Can imagine “entry for two please” in our hot pants and tight tops !!!!
Well if the Lishe Taliban won’t have us !!!!!!!
May 8th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
The clientelle in Mas shebeen dont look like the type of company youd have a quite point with.
May 8th, 2008 at 4:56 pm
Have you got any Kyle ?
May 8th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
good luck to him i say
i saw the pic on the sunday indo and they look ahappy bunch who are doing nobody any harm
May 8th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
hmmm, I wonder if that “Limerick lawyer of great standing (joke) … taking a case on behalf of the Kellys” - can’t imagine who - has had an otherwise interesting day today! Or perhaps it’s his birthday and he had a few extra visitors in.
On the topic at hand. Just asking how the shebeen operates btw, not making comment.
Is Kelly claiming the booze has already been purchased through a ticket scheme or whatever -tax & excise paid we must presume - indirectly by the customer and he’s just offering the use of his shed for its consumption ‘cos he’s such a caring individual? Do cash transactions take place on the “premises”? Any other forms of goods on offer?
May 8th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
I used to go to a biker shebeen in the south of Holland years ago. One member of the club would volenteer to be the barman or woman for the night and serve bottles of beer that had been purchased earlier in the sumermarket by the members.
I doubt this is the system in “my mothers”. I dont think for a minute that the southill shebeen is in any way legal but I think the cops have fucked up.
May 8th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
i say good enough for them…..heard they have been asked to appear on the late late..
May 8th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Heard that to about the late late,i dont think the goverment would like that as it would prob get thses guys more support, what every way it operates thats guards have nothing on them so they got egg on their faces, how do the guards no people are paying over the counter if they have no proof, the ball is rolling and ak isnt gonna stop now.
May 8th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Mickey’s mickey you has not cast the first stone ….I’ve seen numerous occasions on this site where you have name called much worse than Mushy so get off your high horse and practise what you preach.
As for the shebeen its what lots of people do at weekends now especially since the smoking ban and the price of drinks in a pub. Are all summer barbeque’s and nights in with a few friends going to get raided? There seems to be a loop hole somewhere and sure enough they’ll find it.
May 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
More power to him I say, we should all go up and chip in if you aks me, this backward country is a joke, rip off nation everywhere you look and when you try to have an alternative, you get twats having a go, if you don’t like it, don’t go in and stay ignorant.
“Am I to be subjected to Garda harrassment the next time the lads call around for a game of cards?”
The law have been on Kelly’s case for years, nothing new.
Limerick lawyer of great standing (joke) … taking a case on behalf of the Kellys”
Hope whoever he/she is isn’t in trouble over today’s raids.
May 8th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Squid if you’re not able to disagree with someone without throwing in personal insults it’s time you had a good look at yourself. What I wrote was as Mickey’s Mickey said tongue in cheek, meant to be humourous even.Lighten up.

I am not Jesus figure and I am sure either are you. If you scroll back throught these pages you will see I have made apologies when I have been wrong.
A Shebeen would be an illegal pub.
May 8th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
I was at the Kilkenny Beer Festival years ago and they had a big beer tent but difficulty with some licence, possible for the Sunday. Beer in the tent was free on production of tickets which you were given at the door provided you paid an entrance fee equal to the price of a few pints. This arrangement didn’t survive long.
A number of arguments have been made here about having a few friends in etc,but who has so many friends that he does the local out of a lot of it’s business? Also, would you like to be living next door,or even near it?
May 8th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
Next in the granny state “2 or more people drinking in a house is an illegal drink gathering”
May 8th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
@ Walter Mitty
“I am not Jesus figure and I am sure either are you. If you scroll back throught these pages you will see I have made apologies when I have been wrong”
Can you repeat that in English? Are you going to apologize for that?
May 9th, 2008 at 8:19 am
Mushy, I wonder if the owner of the Galvone was approached by the ‘regeneration project’ to sell his premises first, decided to take the money & run, and then decided to blame the Kellys?
I know a lot of public house owners that would love someone with a pot of gold to come & buy their premises!!!
A question I would like to know the answer is “How big is this shed”?
May 9th, 2008 at 8:48 am
This shed is big enough to hold a pool table as well, it’s got a dart board and you’d still hold approx 30 people in it as well, My estimations would make it approx 18ft by 25 or 29ft
May 9th, 2008 at 9:24 am
John Smith, don’t know why anyone would do that.If the Galvone was getting a pot of gold why would he be complaining? Kellys have no case. What they’re doing is breaking any number of laws.Let them do what they’re doing within the legal framework and I’ll be the first to applaud them.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Of course the gala is taking the money and running,it had a monopoly for years up in southill and there are lots of drinkers up there, maaybeif he washed the pub every now and again or pulled good pints then people would stay, before regeneration he would of had no hope of selling that pub and now his dream is comming true

Dont judge people so easily, i drank in gala lots of times and the people you speak of in Shebeen are decent and are a good laugh why post silly comment when you dont know the first thing about them.
I could insult you but i wont as i dont know u.
May 9th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Well said soviet .
May 10th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
I wander are their traveller “friends” are left in?
May 10th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
@ Mickey’s mickey I am aware what a Shebeen is. (in my opinion that’s whats operated from most houses at weekends) Don’t belittle or be condescending towards my comments …
Could you please point to an example of your ‘apologies’. Forgive me but the amount of bull-shite that I’d have to troll through is mountainous. You seem to be aware of the times that youve capitulated and apologized if you could share the proof …
May 11th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
ann
I was not in any way being condescending towards or belittling your comments. I merely pointed out what a shebeen was.
But now the gloves are off my dear. Most houses do not operate shebeens at the weekends because they do not sell alcohol illegally to people. What you are thinking of is called a party.
No I could not point any examples to you. If you really want to know scroll back and do your own research. An easier way might be to google a few key words.
I have no need to proof anything to you.
May 11th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Mickey’s mickey I did why don’t you scroll on over there to the orange man thread and it proves just how skitzo your replies are. On dial up here so I couldn’t possibly troll through all your comments suffice to say you only come on here to blatantly disagree with everyone on nearly all issues. Take a stand on something you truly believe in instead of constantly shit stirring.
May 11th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
Your not making sense! Just because I take a republican view point regarding Irish politics I have to be consumed with hate for the Orange Order? Get real will you! I am neither sectarian nor a bigot.
Go get a life and stop chasing your tail.
May 12th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Mickeys Mickey I never accused you of being either (sectarian nor a bigot) your just adding words to the page here.
Propaganda it seems is your field of expertise not mine ‘I have to be consumed with hate’ when did I ever make reference to this?
This is just more of your delusional mumblings, when some of your recent comments are taken into account you are portrayed as quite a hypocrite dear’.
Go and fabricate some more quotes if it makes one of your personalities happy.
