Broken News: Sindo story “wild speculation” - Garda chief

Perhaps if enough people wrote accurate stuff about Limerick in blogs, it might appear in the independent in three or four years time, like all that ValueIreland stuff did.

Superintendent Willie Keane has called last Sunday’s Independent front page story “idle speculation.” after it emerged that there was no arrest and no gun seized at the entrance of the cemetery where James Cronin was being laid to rest.

The national newspaper had claimed that Gardai had thwarted an attempt by a criminal gang to carry out an attack on mourners at the funeral.

However Superintendent Keane has told the Limerick Leader that no such Garda operation took place.

More from the Leader.

Will the Crime Correspondent of the Independent respond? We will just have to wait and see.

Shock,Horror…. A complete Rag and mouthpiece for FF.. They’ve beena at this kind of thing for years and they’ll keep doing it..

  2. Green Ink Says:

Will the Crime Correspondent of the Independent respond?
    My prediction: no.

  3. Barry Says:

No surprise there then from that piece of trash. Why report accurately when you can just invent a piece of nonsense and continue with their policy of trashing Limerick.

  4. Hoof Says:

    We should be surprised !!!

The lazy bastard who dreamed this one up was on to a good thing as it falls into the “if it’s Limerick, it must be true” category, lapped up by the usual mob. Now all he has to IF he feels like responding is to maintain a “reliable source” tipped him off and that the Garda were denying his report because they’re not as clued in as an Indo hack would be to the criminal mind. And of course, while at it, he will claim journalistic immunity for his alleged source while up on the high horse at Sir Anthony’s Stable.

Response : another pat on the back for helping sell the Indo’s comic book journalism to a willing and gullible public.

  9. Ex Limerick Lass Says:

I have to say as someone who left Limerick many years ago but has continuously subscribed to Limerick newspapers and visits at least four times a year (ony for a weekend, I couldn’t endure any longer) - you lot are splitting hairs here - incorrect reporting - if it didn’t happen, it is only a matter of time in Limerick. An absolute s**t hole!

  10. shortpat Says:

oi squid they should be done for libel or summat here

  11. biggie Says:

a lot of papers get stories wrong. did the story damage a city that couldnt be damaged anymore than it has anyway. i doubt it. murder capital of europe. a foreign doctor told me that a young doctor wanting to learn fast should come to the regional hospital for his traing its like an abbattoir on weekends. limerick is a vioent drugs ridden . dangerous city . and would people ever come out of their fantasy land about it being a great place. i have never seen a city with so many frightened people in my life. not even new york. i have like a lot of people cameras on my house electoronic gates a huge dog sensor lights to keep out these monsters who would kill you for 50 bucks. i wish i didnt need all this security but i do.

  12. mushy Says:

Almost a year ago I gave up buying that arsewipe. There should be a concerted effort in Limerick to boycott it as it’s only a rag and does nothing to report anything but the downside of our city.

  13. goo Says:

unfortuneately theres plenty downside to keepthem going :(

  14. johnone Says:

The report carried by the Indo may have been false but it would not have shocked me if it were true. What amazes me about the Indo is that so many people buy this paper and actually believe every word in it. The most amazing fact about this newsgroup surviving for years is that at the time of the Easter rising they called an numerouse occasions for the execustion of the leaders. What this country needs is a decent publication that is not on a political agenda and of course not owned by Tony O’Reily.

  15. Squid Says:

I notice Willie Keanes response was reported in the Examiner this morning but can’t find it anywhere on the Indo website. I doubt it is in the paper, haven’t had a chance to pick it up yet.

  16. skyguy Says:

how do we actually know its NOT true, just because Supt Willie Keane says its not, sure the guards dont have their hands on the pulse in Limerick at all, maybe it is true and the Guards are playing it down, Maybe its not true, I dont know, but Im willing to let the editor of the Independant reply before I judge him, Biggie your dead right, the decent People in Limerick are living in fear, if the guards got off their donut ass’s and done their job Limerick would be a safer place, the asbo’s are out a year now, they were going to solve all our problems of antisocial behavour, how many have being givening out in Limerick, not one, yes NOT ONE, you are all complaining about a story that did happen, it didnt happen, who cares if it did or didnt happen, it could WELL happen, its not pass these scum, are you all worried that that story is going to damage our city, let me tell you, our city is well in the gutter and has been for a while.

  17. Trinity Says:

I heard, from a reliable source that the Gardai are trying to ‘play down’ the whole Limerick gang/fued shenanigans. As skyguy said above, just because Willie said it’s not true, doesn’t mean something didn’t happen. Wouldn’t be the first time. It would be interesting to see where the Indo got their info from!

  18. shan Says:

There is defineatley a ‘play down’ by the Gardai and politicians. Everything that happens is tagged as ‘feud related’ and a lot is deviant criminal activity. The hope is that it dies down and gets relegated to ‘yesterdays news’ and the root cause will never be dealt with.

  19. biggie Says:

the latest laugh is te new laws being brought in about alcohol. under 18s drinking in public. a guard can now take the cans off the youth. laugh. a guard had always the power to do that, closing off licenses at 10 oc. well the young drinkers will will just get drunk earlier. stopping sales of alcohol in night clubs after 12. 30. well some sense in that one i must admit.

  21. mel Says:

There was a debate on the new laws on limericks live 95fm today the majority of people said it wont make a difference cutting back on opening times, or making it less available in the small shops. It all comes back to parenting monkey does what monkey sees, and if monkey sees mammy and daddy drinking at home 7 nights a week well its ok for them even if it is outside in the garden, they then move over to the wall by the field, or up around the corner. Mammy and Daddy are to pissed to care where they are knowing their drinking on the streets, and whats worse they probably bought it for them. There was a girl i knew, her drink was “Buckfast” she would get absoutly plastered, then she moved on to drugs, would fight with her mother beat her up wreck the house, break the windows the guards would be called but really there was nothing could be done, and then she would go to work after causing so much destruction as though butter wouldn,t melt. Whats my point? well if the so called parents were sober and parented properly giving a better example it wouldn,t be happening the kids would have respect for the parents………

  22. Roisin Says:

But Mel, how is the cycle going to be broken? How can someone come out of such an upbringing and suddenly be a good parent by our standards. ? Probably, within their own damaged set of rules, some are doing the best they can but the chips are stacked too high. Even if they get new houses etc., the mind set (and brain chemical set-up) is now set to this atmosphere of anxiety and confrontation. It would take a massive influx of very experienced social and community workers with excellent track records (get help from outside the country if necessary) to give time to individual families to help change the patterns. And possibly for the their new neighbours to be willing to give them umpteen chances and have a level of goodwill.

  23. mel Says:

Roisin you are right i understand what you are saying. its just that there are so many antisocial families it draggs the normal hard working people down, espically the ones living right next door to it or in the same estates. And i am not the perfect parent, but every one from the age of 2 knows right from wrong. And how many chances are we supposed to give.

  24. biggie Says:

we sure have a great site going here. i have to commend squid for such work it must take up so much of his timeand patience.. lively debate is a great thing. but to the few people who get personal with others who have a different opinion let me tell you that when you do you lose the debate. attack the issue but never the person. thats the secret of debate. its good to see so many people interested in their city and what goes on. i often sit here wondering who you are but its better that people dont know one another. if you know other bloggers its impossible to separate the blogger from the blog. so squid i salute you. to all you bloggers keep it going. your great.
