re Fairtrade, it seems as if the producers are still making the same profit and charging the end user (us) to pay the grower his “fair price”. None of the various middlemen seem prepared to take any of the hit while passing it on and charging top dollar. Don’t get me wrong - in principle this sounds great - but Christ, it’s way above the mark too. Maybe some more enlightened contributor has worked out how the money is distributed.

I don’t think fairtrade is overpriced. Even if it’s a few shillings more than a jar of Maxwell House then those are shillings I happily fork over. I should note that I earn a mere pittance but I make a modest effort to shop responsibly and don’t care if I could get an equivalent cheaper in Lidl or Aldi.

I buy somme fairtrade products but I’m not sure if I should be putting in more of an effort to buy Irish products. I realise the if an Irish producer goes bust he can potentially go work in a factory to stay alive but if a fairtrade producer goes broke the same option wouldn’t be there and therefore the consequences are worse.
