Cystic Fibrosis ,What do you know about it?

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

This morning as I was driving and listening to the Ed Myers show on 95fm ,it was discussing the plight of those with Cystic Fibrosis..more below (Cystic Fibrosis (also called mucoviscidosis) is Ireland’s most common life-threatening inherited disease. Approximately 1 in 19 people are carriers of the CF gene and where two carriers parent a child together, there is a 1 in 4 chance of the baby being born with Cystic Fibrosis. CF affects the glands, damaging many organs including the lungs, the pancreas, the digestive tract and the reproductive system. It causes a thick sticky mucus to be produced, blocking the bronchial tubes and preventing the body’s natural enzymes from digesting food. Cystic Fibrosis primarily affects the lungs and the digestive system. A build up of mucus can make it difficult to clear bacteria and leads to cycles of lung infections and inflammation, which can eventually lead to damage of the lungs.CF can also make it difficult to digest and absorb adequate nutrients from food. Mucus blocks the duct of the pancreas, preventing enzymes from reaching the intestines to digest food.As a result, persons with CF must consume artificial enzymes with food, to help them absorb adequate nutrition from their food. They must also follow a demanding daily routine of physical therapy to keep the lungs free of congestion and infection.Additional organ systems involved are the reproductive tract and the sweat glands. Other organ systems may be involved to leser degrees. The result is that people with CF are prone to constant chest infections and malnutrition. However as therapeutic options have expanded over the last decade, significant advances have been achieved in both life expectancy and quality of life.)Your life expectancy is short early 20’s ,Dr Michael Mahony who is a Consultant Paediatrician for the Mid Western Regional Experience has a vast wealth of experience in Cystic Fibrosis states that the life expectancy is increasing due to medical advances but funding has still to catch on.(JPMcmanus has donated over 100000 in funding towards it !)He states CF is a fatal disease but the period of survival is been extended, perhaps with proper funding we could have more like Mr.Mahony to investigate this fatal disease further.

The 95Fm on Cystic Fibrosis a return to I was quite moved by some of the comments ,especially the parent who had lost a loved one at such a young age ,she was very brave and full of praise for all the staff and the Doctors in the Mid West Regional Hospital who did so much ,Through her pain and grief she still finds the time to return to thank them 2 years later . The facilities in the Limerick Hospital in dealing with Cystic Fibrosis are better than in Dublin it was reiterated during the show, considering there is such a shortage of staff there, who seem to be off their feet constantly due to work overload and staff shortages.

Interestingly an anonymous call was made to the 95fm by an employee of the HSE stating it would be so much better if the HSE had not placed an embargo on the hiring of staff ,patient care is been neglected at a cost with lives.

Accountability in the HSE is non –existent for the millions squandered while this poor woman above has all but a grave to visit and a memory of a life short lived. There seems to be no end in sight to the never ending problems that the staff on the ground have to deal with on a daily basis while Admin in the HSE recommends exhorbant pay rises for itself to the detriment of the PEOPLE ‘S LIVES of all ages.

This week is Cystic Fibrosis week to raise awareness, please see the link below to the Late Late Show from last Friday Night where it was discussed,

Rebuilding a City: Boundary Commission issues recommendations on City boundary

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

The boundary commission charged with making a recommendation based on the previous recommendation by the Fitzgerald Report have suggested (I’m not using the word recommendation again in this post) that everything in County Limerick between the Shannon River and the Clare border be transferred to Limerick City Council.

The commission received 12 submissions from the public, all but one called for a boundary extension.

The report can be read here (PDF Format)

All that is needed now secure a proper boundary extension for the south side of the city.

The only reaction I have to hand at the minute is Maurice Quinlivan, who has been calling for Moyross to be moved into the city for at least the last two years. I will add other reaction as I find it

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome today’s recommendation by the boundary Committee to formally recommend that the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley, TD, “proceed with a boundary alteration” encompassing all the land area of Limerick County North of the River Shannon. This will be a long overdue and very welcome extension of Limerick City. Sinn Féin has long called for action to be taken to ensure the whole of that area should be included in Limerick City. In Moyross for instance the present situation, where several hundred homes are owned by Limerick City Council but nevertheless fall within the area of County Limerick is patently absurd and needs to be ended. Similarly the situation in Woodview where the estate was divided along one street was bizarre. However now that the committee has recommended the ending of that situation, I hope the Minister will act to bring the matter to a swift conclusion and quickly grant the necessary extension.

I am very pleased that the committee agreed with the submission I made on behalf of Sinn Féin and that all the land area North of the river Shannon will be brought into the City. A key recommendation of the John Fitzgerald report was a boundary extension and we are very pleased that progress can now be made on the issue. The extension is essential for the success of the regeneration of parts of Limerick City, Moyross in particular. This regeneration will ultimately benefit the whole of the City and it is imperative that this boundary extension is granted quickly. Whilst today’s announcement concurs with the recommendation in the John Fitzgerald report and is very welcome it only addresses one aspect of the boundary extension required by Limerick City. We must now have a rational discussion between Limerick City and County Councils regarding the Southern and Western suburbs of the City. Limerick City has been strangled by the failure thus far to have a boundary extension. This discussion needs to take place. I would urge all parties to support the holding of this discussion”

From Trish Brennan of the Green Party in Limerick

I welcome the conclusion of the report and I now call on my party colleague John Gormley to forward the legislative changes necessitated by the report recommendations. I would also like to take this opportunity to ask the Minister to prioritise, in terms of financial support from central government, the mid west region in general and Limerick city and county in particular. In the last year, the area has been hit with the loss of Aer Lingus’s Heathrow routes and a steady stream of job losses. I know that the Minister is committed to ensuring that the Limerick region will recover and grow stronger. The implementation of the report’s recommendations will be an important step towards this

Minister Gormley intends to put forward the findings of the Commission’s report. These findings have to be approved by both the Dail and the Seannad before they can be implemented.

Concerns at Shannon despite good news

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Fears for the future of Shannon Airport continue to linger despite news that direct flights between Shannon and Atlanta will continue.

On June 3rd, Delta will commence four flights a week to Atlanta, which will increase to one flight a day on July 1st to October 1st.

However, there are fears on the cargo side of Shannon Airport’s business from Clare’s Mayor, Patricia McCarthy.

“Air France claims that any plan to relocate the scheduled service, which carries an estimated 3000 tonnes of airfreight annually, is due to network reorganisation rather than specific airport issues. That will come as little consolation to Shannon’s major global logistics firms and internationally trading companies, which rely on such services for the viability of their own operations.” said the mayor in a statement released today.

“The airline’s Boeing Jumbo 747 aircraft is capable of carrying freight of 20-30ft in length, significantly larger than any of the other Shannon-based operators. Each Saturday afternoon the service carries an average of 50 tonnes of airfreight to destinations worldwide, including Asia, Europe, and North and South America. To lose such a valuable direct service would have a detrimental effect on the surrounding region’s international trading performance, which depends on Shannon’s cargo services and facilities for timely access to their major markets”

“I would ask Aer France to immediately clarify its intentions regarding its future operations at Shannon Airport. The facility’s unrestricted runway, round the clock operation, efficient handling and the presence of major multinational firms nearby make it an ideal location for a scheduled airfreight service, which is why I cannot understand Aer France’s proposed move to an overly congested airport”
