Argos will open despite strike action

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Saturday shoppers may be confronted with an unusual site of a picket line on Cruises street this weekend as members of the MANDATE trade union initiate a one day work stoppage.

In times past, Argos, used to give it’s staff pay increases over and above national pay agreements, however, they have now decided that they will only award increases in accordance with the latest partnership agreement, Towards 2016.

However, MANDATE workers, who represent approximately 35% of those employed at Argos, are seeking a 10% payrise.

If an agreement cannot be found, another work stoppage will take place at the 31 Argos stores around the country.

Withe some picketing, and others being asked to cross said picket, it’s going to be an uncomfortable place to work for a while I would imagine.

This is just greed. It would be something if Argos had said, “fuck you, we are going to hold off on pay rises as is our right” but they have said they are honouring existing partnership agreements, negotiated by ICTU on behalf of the common worker, but these people want more!

Get back to work and be glad you are not one of the 2,000 people who have been made redundant in the last six months in this part of the country.

Mathew Potter has a new book out … I want, I want, I want…

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

You might remember historian Dr. Mathew Potter from his previously thumping good read that was The Government and People of Limerick, A history of Limerick Corporation/City Council 1197 - 2006.

Well if you are looking for a companion book to go with it, that is if you are as much of a local history nut as myself, you would be well advised to get your hands on his new book, The First Citizens of the Treaty City - The Mayors and Mayoralty of Limerick 1197-2007.

I’ll be dropping hints left right and centre for the next four weeks to people that I know in the hope that some nice relative gets this for me for Christmas.

But My expectations are high after the first book mentioned in this post.

The Government and people of Limerick can still be found for those wishing to buy both for someone.

Mathew Potter is the subject of the Leader Interview this week, Click here to read.
